Trance mediumship is commonly misunderstood.
True trance is where the medium is totally unaware of
anything that has taken place, they allow Spirit to
draw close and use them for the purpose Spirit choose
to use them for. A better term to use is ‘altered states
of consciousness’, as this better describes what happens
in the majority of cases of so called ‘trance’ mediumship.
Inspiration
Inspiration is a lightly altered state of consciousness.
The medium is very much conscious but allows their consciousness
to alter slightly almost into that sleepy relaxed state
we often feel just at waking up or just before we fall
asleep. In that altered state the medium is open and
receptive and if willing can allow a Spirit worker to
draw close and through blending of thought and mind,
can share the words of the Spirit influence as opposed
to it just being their thoughts and words. This level
is one most commonly found in use by mediums giving
platform addresses (sermon).
Governed
A slightly deeper state, although the medium is still
largely conscious, they are in a far more relaxed state
and strive to keep from interfering with the Spirit
who has drawn that much closer. The medium will often
find that they remember parts or all of what has been
said through them, but was equally aware that they could
not interfere with the process. The most common experience
at this level is that the medium is aware of the approach
of the worker, feels directed to speak, and then as
they start the talking process their consciousness slips
into that slightly deeper state.
Deep Trance or Control
Deep trance is rare, and is a level where more or less
the medium is completely unaware of what has taken place
through them. Their trust in the workers is such that
they are prepared to “let go and let Spirit do it”’
and are happy for this to take place. Control is often
misunderstood. A common misunderstanding is to think
that you have absolutely no control over what is taking
place, or that you leave your physical body whilst some
discarnate Spirit jumps in. This is totally incorrect.
Even in deep trance the medium is connected to their
physical body, if they were not, quite simply they would
die. Yes they co-operate with Spirit and give them ‘control’
over the physical body. However the medium ultimately
has control over everything said and done through their
body and would be able if they were for any reason unhappy
with what was taking place, to regain consciousness
and resume control over their body.
The Point of it all?
Whilst the mediums consciousness plays any part in the
proceedings their thoughts can interfere with the thoughts
of the Spirit workers. Operating at the Inspiration
level is the easiest one to interfere with, and the
deeper the level the less the mediums consciousness
can interfere. Some of the greatest physical phenomena
recorded has happened with mediums in an altered state
of consciousness. However it is important to note that
physical phenomena can occur quite readily without any
medium present being in an altered state of consciousness.
Therefore Trance is not necessarily a pre-requisite
for Physical Phenomena.
