Physical Phenomena has been experienced by mankind throughout the history of the earth. Simply put Physical phenomena is the manifestation of Spirit in a way that can be seen, heard and felt physically by those present. There is a common misconception that trance is a pre-requisite for phenomena. This couldn’t be further from the truth, although equally it should be noted that some of the best recorded manifestations do and have taken place whilst a medium was in a ‘deep trance’ state. However manifestations have occurred and been recorded on numerous occasion without the trance state being induced. The list of Phenomena is quite lengthy, for brevity and space we list some of the more commonly known ones.

Raps and Taps
On March 31st 1848 in Hydesville USA, the Fox family were disturbed by raps and taps manifesting all around their house. The family devised a method of communication, and from that event modern day Spiritualism was born. Raps and taps are still witnessed today although communication via this method is laborious and a slow process in building up a full message. Table tipping was all the rage in Victorian England, but became less popular with the advent of mental mediumship which made the message process much simpler and quicker. It is widely understood that for this manifestation to occur energy is drawn from the sitters and manipulated by Spirit to produce the raps and taps.

Materialisation
There have been many materialisation mediums over the years. Materialisation is where ectoplasm is formed using energy and material from the medium, surrounding sitters and room fabrics to create a replica of the Spirit communicators physical body as it was. The manifestations produced by various materialisation mediums have been recognised by the relatives still here on earth, and is acknowledged as one of the most evidential forms of mediumship. It is equally acknowledged that whilst there have been many genuine appearances, such seances being conducted in the dark in the most part, left the mediums open to accusations (rightly or wrongly) of fraud.

Electronic Voice Phenomena
Electronic voice phenomena or EVP as it is commonly called is an area of phenomena that has seen great growth in recent years. Voices have been recorded of discarnate spirits. Some being compared to known earthly recordings and it was found that the voice signature was the same. This is a form of phenomena that appears to be easier to manifest than some others, and it’s popularity appears to be growing.

Independent/Direct Voice
Independent or Direct voice phenomena is where a replica of the human voice box is created from ectoplasm outside the body of the medium, and the Spirit communicators are able to use the voice box to speak in their own words, Direct from Spirit and Independent of the medium. One of the more well known direct voice mediums was the late Leslie Flint. His early development of this ability meant he missed much of what was happening as he was in a deep trance state. However as it developed further he was able to retain consciousness and even speak himself to the Spirit voices.

Levitation
Using ectoplasm in a hardened form, spirit create rods and form the rods into a cantilever to lift tables and other such devices from the ground. In the case of Douglas Home, a well known medium of his day, he was taken into a trance state, levitated horizontally out through one window on an upper floor of a house, out into the street and back in through the window of an adjoining room. All of which witnessed by and attested to by several people.
